Plenartagung : Parlamentspräsident Jerzy Buzek eröffnete die Tagungssitzung mit dem Hinweis auf den Fall der Iranerin Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, die im Iran zum Tod durch Steinigung verurteilt wurde. Er fügte hinzu, dass Frau Mohammadi Ashtiani nach Bekanntwerden ihres Falles in den europäischen Medien auch zu 99 Peitschenhieben verurteilt wurde. Präsident Buzek forderte die iranischen Behörden auf, diesen Fall fair und transparent zu gestalten.

The legality of the French government's expulsion of Roma people has yet to be established, with regard both to EU law on free movement and temporary residence and to the Charter of Fundamental Rights, the European Commission told Civil Liberties Committee MEPs in a debate on Thursday. The overall position of Roma people in Europe will be debated in plenary session on Tuesday 7 September in Strasbourg.

EU authorities are to get tough new powers to settle disputes among national financial supervisors and to ban risky financial products and activities, in a revamp of EU financial supervision plans agreed on Thursday. If national supervisors fail to act, then the authorities may also impose decisions directly on financial institutions, such as banks, so as to remedy breaches of EU law.

Knowingly using the sexual or other services of a trafficked person would be made a criminal offence, and penalties for traffickers would be stepped up, by amendments, tabled Thursday by the Civil Liberties and Women's Rights committees, to a draft EU directive on human trafficking. The proceeds and profits of human trafficking crime should be seized and used to support victims, add MEPs.

Eine Experten-Jury hat die deutschen Kandidaten für den Journalistenpreis des Europäischen Parlaments 2010 ausgewählt. Die nominierten Beiträge in den Kategorien Print, Fernsehen und Radio stehen nun im europäischen Wettbewerb mit den nationalen Gewinnern der anderen Mitgliedsstaaten.

Die nationalen Gewinner der dritten Ausgabe des Europäischen Karlspreises der Jugend stehen fest. Aus Deutschland wird das Projekt des Europäischen CNC-Netzwerks - Zug für Europa an der Endrunde um den Jugend-Karlspreis teilnehmen. Insgesamt haben sich europaweit 216 Projekte an dem Wettbewerb beteiligt, aus Deutschland waren es 29.

Four months ago, Parliament rejected the EU-USA SWIFT bank data transfer agreement. This week, MEPs should approve a new version of the text, after negotiating certain safeguards with the Council and the US Treasury Department, and winning an undertaking that the EU will develop a system that precludes the need to transfer data in bulk to the USA.

To avoid making EU legislation over-complicated and technical the Lisbon Treaty introduced a new system for delegating to the Commission limited powers to make minor changes to laws, provided these do not affect the "core" legislation decided by Parliament and the Council.
